Equity investment in UK start-ups and early stage companies totalled £3.04bn in the first half of 2017, up more than 70% from the previous six months, according to research company Beauhurst.

On the face of it, the rise in investment represents good news for companies with rapid growth aspirations but there is a caveat. While the amount invested by angels and VCs increased, the number of deals declined. There was certainly a lot of money around, but the two-sided picture suggests that investors are narrowing their focus to concentrate their resources on those businesses that are deemed most likely to succeed. You could characterize it as a flight to quality.
