In 2008, Kamara made another bold career move, taking voluntary redundancy to explore opportunities in West Africa before making a definitive return to Sierra Leone in 2012. She initially joined the Sierra Leone Commercial Bank, a role that allowed her to refine her expertise in compliance and people management within a structured environment. However, her career was destined for a more dynamic and challenging arena. When an unexpected opportunity arose in the mining industry, she faced a critical choice between the safety of her comfort zone and the volatile, male-dominated world of mining. She later recalled her thought process, stating, “My instinct is often to pursue what I’m advised against… I felt a strong conviction and guidance from the universe: ‘Go! In 2015, Kamara embarked on her groundbreaking role in the mining industry as Human Resources Director for Sierra Rutile Limited, one of the country’s largest operations. She quickly established herself as a formidable leader in an environment where women in senior positions were a rarity. Her role soon expanded to encompass corporate affairs and government relations, placing her at the nexus of the company’s most critical functions. Her tenure coincided with a period of immense change: the acquisition of Sierra Rutile by Australia’s Illuka Resources in 2016. Joining just a month before the sale was announced, she found herself at the center of her greatest professional challenge. While many were daunted by the stringent international compliance standards introduced by the new ownership, Kamara thrived. Following her success at Sierra Rutile, Kamara was recruited as Vice President for Corporate Affairs at Marampa Mines Limited (MML), where she became the company’s chief representative in engagements with government bodies and key stakeholders. Her expansive portfolio included overseeing Human Resources and Community Relations, where she was instrumental in supporting the CEO’s efforts to advance the company’s Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) agenda.
