Contrary to popular belief, companies focused on closing wealth gaps can be successful in their mission and turn a profit.
In 2011, we founded Kapor Capital, an Oakland-based venture capital firm, to test this concept. We wanted to see whether investing with a focus on diversity could yield top financial results, and our new book Closing the Equity Gap: Creating Wealth and Fostering Justice in Startup Investing details that experiment. We found that companies that help create wealth and close equity gaps for low income communities and/or communities of color can yield strong financial turns. And more VCs and investors should be looking to invest in such companies.
