As a nation, we’re obsessed with lists. We want better, cheaper and more exciting rankings of everything. Us media folks drive this mania.
Yet when it comes to colleges, “best” lists drive me crazy. They don’t tell you anything important, nor do they help you find a debt-free degree. Do we need to know that Harvard is slightly better than Yale or MIT?
So when U.S. News published its annual college list recently, I grimaced.
